With yur current system specs, Windows Vista is unlikely to run smoothly for you. Vista is extremely draining on system resources, and even top of the line PCs have difficulty with some of its more advanced features. This is because Vista has been designed to be a keystone operating system for the next several years, and is taking into account that new technologies are always being released (top of the line PCs today will only be average compared to the PCs that will be available in a coupla years from now).
My advice here would be to stick with your current OS, which I assume will be Windows XP. Not just because it'll run more smoothly on your system, but also because Vista is brand new and will not have all the bugs worked out of it yet. In a few months from now once Microsoft has dealt with the usual post-release programming blunders and you've had the chance to upgrade your system a little, upgrade to Vista.

There is a program you can run from the Microsoft website which will tell you. However, do some research, too, before you do. There are restrictions which aren't on XP or 2000, even, so it really depends upon what you use your computer for. Also, there are different levels of Vista, so you have to find the one which suits your needs and budget.

If you don't want to run Aero theme then it will work, but not as good as you would expect. 512 Mb is required only to run windows vista, not others applications installed with it. If you want to play games, listen to music, do some multimedia editing not even 1 Gb is enough...
I would suggest upgrading your ram to 1 gb, at least!

I say you're able to not downgrade to XP because the computing device develop into especially bulit for Vista, and a downgrade will be disasterious in case you do not have the XP drivers for each and each and every of the hardware you're utilising.

well the main thing is the video card. vista has the capabilities for some great graphics, but only if you have a great video card. i don't know much about graphics cards, but you can talk to someone at your computer store about it. other than, all your other specs sound great. you should have no problem running vista.

Do not run the Vista Upgrade Advisor, it will give you a bunch of false info. with the specs you have it should run fine, but Vista still has alot of bugs.

Unfortunately not. You need at least 1GB of RAM and a dual-core processor is recommended.
Wait until the bugs are worked out of Vista then get a new computer. =)
