Probably because for many years the work she did was devalued by society, taken for granted by her family and husband,mind numbing boring work.... so now she needs some one to validate that her life is worth something.

I thought it was more younger women that need to be validated, and when women reach a certain age, they stop caring about what people think of them and just do as they please.
