Always keep at least ten dollars, it will usually get you to somewhere that will take a check. Never keep more cash than you can afford to lose. Fires and robberies happen all the time. Crooks know to look in places you haven't thought of yet so on place is very safe. If you do not have a checking account, you can buy a debit VISA card at Wal-Mart or Walgreens or grocery stores. You give the store your cash and they give you a Visa card with that amount as a balance and you can use it just like any Visa card until you have spent the amount you put on it at the store. It has a PIN number and in some cases, if you put the info in a good place, you can get the money back if you lose the card.

Just a small amount to pay for odds and ends - no more than £100 / $200. Everything else gets paid by card or cheque.

Cash? What's that? ;-)
$100.
Although I guess that wouldn't help me in the case of a 24-like catastrophe and all the ATMs were out. Guess I'd better rethink my disaster plan!
