defensive 3 seconds means that you are staying in the painted area for 3 seconds (if your at defense), you are only allowed to stay there if you are guarding someone in the paint

3 in the key means that you are staying in the painted area for 3 seconds (if your at offense) i think this was implemented to prevent players on being idle at the middle..

In pro basketball, an offensive player cannot stand in the painted area under the basket (referred to as the key) for more than 3 seconds. A defensive player cannot stand in the key area for more than 3 seconds either. In college basketball, an offensive player cannot stand in the key area for than 3 seconds and the offensive player dribbling the ball cannot be guarded closesly without moving for more than 5 seconds. Either scenario results in a turnover and the other team gets the ball.

def 3 seconds - standing in the paint for 3 seconds without guarding anyone (on defense)

3 in the key - standing in the paint on offense w/o shooting for more than 3 seconds

3 in the key is a turnover. defensive 3 seconds is a technical free throw and then a turnover.
