To understand the stability of electrons in their orbits a good idea is to apply the De Broglie model: electrons are waves of frequency given by energy = h x frequency (h is the Planck constant). The only stable orbits are those where the number of wave lenghts of the electron are a whole number, in order to fit completely in them. Historically it was the first explanation for the stable orbits of Bohr hidrogen atom.
