It is impossible in a free society to mobilize and maintain support for massive military spending unless you can put a face on a enemy that can legitimately scare people. Absent the existence of such an enemy, you need to find a label that is scary and catchy enough to instill the requisite fear.

Maybe.

Both sought to undermine the country.

Read up on the Venona project - declassified documents from the former Soviet Union conslusively proved the penetration of the US government by Soviet spies.

Joseph McCarthy was a blowhard, but just because he made unsubstantiated claims doesn't mean that his premise was false.

And in each case, the liberals downplayed the threat, and did not do enough to protect the country.

And then acted offended when people pointed that out.

Terrorist and communist, they are not buzzwords but the
new name for a group of stupid people hellbent on not
succeeding at anything, killing for a cause is both senseless
criminal and outmoded, as for communism, show me one
true communist system that expouses complete communism
where people have not suffered, for this type of system..............

The truth is, that there needs to be a new order of socialism
and social upliftment worldwide, terrorism and communism
are outmoded stupid, unfit systems that benefitted no one and
need to be dumped in the trash can of superciliousness, along
with all the other outmoded systems out there..............................

The key to success should be a broadbased mixed system,
in which everyone is equally allowed opportunities, but
equality will never be a mainstay for everyone in anyone
system, there will always be have's and have not's, always
be those with brains and those without, and no matter which
political platform you jump off there has not been a perfectly
structured economy anywhere in which everything works
for every single member of society, this is why communism
failed as a system so miserabley.................................................

Terrorism kills, communism failed to give it took away and made
everyone equally poor....................................................................

By definition terrorist is anyone who terrorizes, ..I guess how well it works(terrorism) can be measured by how easily one is terrorized. Some people,it would seem, are afraid of their own shadow, thus are pretty much doomed to a life of FEAR......Wow! Too bad,huh..?

Yes. George Bush is the new Senator McCarthy, and his definition of "terrorist" is anyone who does not agree with him or subscribe to his beliefs.
