Is this cousin your "first cousin"? I don't know if it's "illegal", but it should be.
Most people realize that there are some things in life you just don't do and some lines you just don't cross. Marrying your "cousin" is right up there!
Maybe they are being "mean" because they see what you (apparently), are missing! What does your family think about this? I find it hard to believe they would approve of such a thing.
You should seek some professional counseling before you continue down this road. Hopefully, a counselor can help you understand why this is wrong on so many levels!
Good luck.

Religious beliefs argue against a person marrying a 1st cousin or closer. Also, depending on the research, some say there is a 2 to 3 % increase in birth defects among children born of marrying relatives. There are genetic diseases that are recessive until they are brought out by appearing in both the mother and father and this is more likely by marrying a cousin.

Welcome to my world. My wife and I are cousins,(first) in the state we are in it is legal. If it were not, we certainly could not have even gotten a liscense.
It is legal in 26 of the 50 states, some require counseling or testing of some sort.
You're going to find out that people are very strongly opinionated on this subject. As for us, we simply don't mention it. We actually never even thought of ourselves as being related.
I think there is a site called cousincouples.com or something similar that you might find helpful.
And by the way, although we don't have any children together, I can tell you that the risk of birth defects DO NOT increase.
Take care.

If your cousin is a very very distant cousin, many times removed, then go ahead. People are not mean, they just meant well or not sure of your connection with your cousin. In some Asian countries, marrying among cousins are the norm and many families preferred their children to marry their cousins!! Well, all in the family i guessed.

They are telling you not to marry your cousin, because keeping blood lines that close is never good for your future children.
I encourage you to look it up on the Internet there are cases where children born to close blood lines have health problems and some die right after birth.
Please think carefully before you decide to go through with the wedding.
Good luck.

If this is your first cousin, there are genetic reasons - higher chances for birth defects in your children - why you should not marry him. The more distant a cousin, the less likelihood of birth defects. They are just concerned for your future.

Well you cant marry a 1st cousin - you are too closely related, I dont think its legal and your kids will come out all funny. If its a more distant relative than that I dont think they are any laws that would stop you.

is he your first cousin? that may not be genetically very healthy. But beyond first cousion, as in second , third whatever - although its might be difficult socially there is actually no reason why you shouldnt. Move away from the people that know all your history and live your life as you please. Its a free world, thank goodness.
