The area around Heathrow is quite amazingly dull really!
As someone has suggested, Windsor isn't too far away. In the other direction you could take a number 211 bus to Hampton Court - but I warn this is quite a long ride. A 441 bus will take you to Staines every 30 mins for a stroll beside the Thames. Or an A10 or A40 bus will take you to Uxbridge for a good shopping centre. Tube to Hounslow for a bit more shopping.....?

If you take the tube from any of the Heathrow terminals you can travel into central london on the Piccadilly Line in about 45 minutes. Your closest station is Tottenham Court Road which is one line away from Leicester Square on the Northern Line which is only a short walk. Alternatively you can take the Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect into Paddinton which are about 15-20 minutes, but then you'll still have to tube it to Tottenham Court Road station at an extra 15 minutes (Bakerloo line to Oxford Circus then Central to TCR). All up, cost varying. It will be between 45 minutes to an hour once you board the train.

Hey Kojak, Near Heathrow airport itself there is nothing to do i'm afraid but If you travel down the M25 to the chertsey jct u can go to Thorpe Park which is part of the Madamme Tussauds amusement group, it is an ace theme park not excessively expensive and is a great day out.
A bit further a field u could visit Chessington World of Adventures, its run by the same people and is great for young adults and ace day out at both though

A few stops further along the Piccadilly line is Osterley. There is a beautiful large park here and it just about 10 minutes walk from the station. A stroll round here is like being in the heart of the countryside, very peaceful and quiet - except for some low flying plane overhead!
