Try Ubuntu. This operating system is free. It has a graphical interface and is ideal for someone new to Linux. It's free (and always will be) Plus all of the programs you will ever need are free too.

If you have 256MB of RAM get the full version

If you have less tha 256MB of RAM get XUBUNTU

No Linux is'nt any OS, It is just a Kernel, yes Linux is only a kernel or u can say this is soul of OS. just like system32 contains kernel of windows.
Linux is created by linus torvald, When this kernel is used by s/w companies, they embeded their softwares, applications, drivers to it. Then this combination gets its name as Linux Operating System, The companies that making software and applications for linux kernel is SuSe, RedHat, Mandriva, Debian, Slackware etc. That why u get the name RedHat Linux, SuSe Linux, when u go to buy *Linux OS.
Because OS is a combination of s/w apps and driver that works jointly with kernel to talk with h/w. Here Linux is free kernel and companies making apps for this and selling linux with their name.
