I absolutely agree with you on this. I've seen a dead cat and a dead dog (which the police were with and were waiting for the owner) by roadsides and it's awful that they don't get treated with more respect. Of course, the owners are as much to blame as the drivers. My friends dog got run over in front of me a couple of years ago when he followed me while I was walking my dogs. He was across the road then suddenly ran in front of a car to cross over and got hit. He was fine, luckily, but the driver was very shaken up and in fact very concerned for the dog. But not enough people care about road safety, be it towards animals or humans.

I think it is sad when any precious life is left to die as the result of machinery but I don't think people should wreck their car by putting in into a ditch or tree in order to avoid an animal. If I were faced with the decision to hit an animal or run my car into a tree, I'd have to concentrate and make a very conscious effort to go ahead and hit the animal although I would feel terrible about it. I'm afraid my instant reflex would be to drive into the tree or even worse, into another car...that would be stupid, wouldn't it?
Also, I always stop if I should hit an animal and I would try to help it or take it to the nearest vet if I could. I carry towels and blankets in my car at all times incase of any accident like that. However, I would lose my job if I stopped for an animal and I was late for work without calling in. If I stopped for a child or any human being that was struck, I would not lose my job. It would make me think two times if I struck an animal on my way to work. Is a dog or cat worth losing a job over?
It is sad to reflect that all life has a price tag on it and it is proof to me that money rules and not respect for life. Very sad isn't it? I really love animals and consider them the children of all human beings but the rest of the world doesn't see it that way. We really need to be more respectful of life in general but somewhere we have to draw the line between foolish and respectful. For everyone, I guess, that line is different.

I totally agree with you, i know a child's life is precious but i understand what you mean about animals people are supposed to report to the police station if they run a dog over, but they dont ,and cats are not even reported. So the owners have no idea what has happened to their pet. Yes more action should be taken when an animal is run over,

Actually it is against the law to leave an injured dog in the road after an accident, it must be reported to the police. A cat however does not have the same standing as they are still classed as wild animals

An interesting point when considering the diverse cultures of this planet. There are countries where it is punishable to leave a cat after you have hit it - as their culture dictates that it should be cremated with full burial rites. Your refusal to cooperate in these rights is punishable.
Conversely, in the self same region - some motorists actually see dogs as a target as they consider dogs to be the devil incarnate.
I do not think you should be punished for hitting an animal (unless it is a case of witnessed dangerous driving), I do think you should be punished for hitting an animal and leaving it if the incident is witnessed.

if you run over a dog it shouldnt really be out on its own ,a cat well what can you do ?most people would get out of their car and check the animal if its dead with no collar on it there isnt much more people can do,i love my dog very much ,and i wouldnt let him out on his own but alot of owners do where i live because they cant be bothered to take them out and pick up after them.

Animals are very important but at the end of the day they shouldnt be allowed to run about free near roads. It would be more effective if the owners were punished for being careless.

It doesn't follow that the cat or dog would be "left to die in the road".
Some motorists would actually stop and try and do something.
I think you are still supposed to report an accident involving a dog.
However, where do you draw the line? Hedgehogs? rabbits?

if it is deliberate, yes. If its an accident, no. Ive hit dogs and cats before by accident. I wasnt speeding or anything. Cant help it if they just run out in front of you. It should be the same way with kids as well. If some stupid kid isnt being watched by his stupid parents and runs right out in front of you and you cant stop in time, the police want to take you to jail and the parents want to sue you.

I, like most people, would feel bad if I hit a dog or a cat, but I also rightly consider human life to be worth much more than that of an animal.
