You can put it on craigslist.org for free.
You should consider at least finding a for sale by owner company, one that can help you with signs, contracts, etc... You can even pay a small fee and get your house listed on the MLS, so agents can bring buyers to you (expect to pay 2.5-3% to any agent who finds you a buyer though).
And the other answers are correct, in that it is risky to do on your own, and from what I've seen, most of the time you will get no more money in pocket by not using an agent, as most offers will discount the price to give you the same "net" amount you would have gotten anyway. Meanwhile you took on more risk and spent more time.

I would strongly recommend an agent. Selling your home is a lot harder than people think. Yes some people are lucky and sell their home without an agent, but most end up having horror stories, and use and agent in the the long run. This ends up costing you more money. If you decide to go it alone good luck.

Be careful!
REal estate is a crooked industry with many crooks looking to rip you off. Realtors are there to give you this protection. Read some of these real estate stories right here on this site. Some very sad tales of people not getting an agent to protect them.
I teach real estate classes for those wanting to obtain their license. every month I have at least 3 people who come in to get their license, that reveal that in fact they are in an entangled law suit either buying or selling and cannot extract themselves ortheir property from the courts. They no longer qualify for realtors assistance. now they are forced to pay an attorney. They are out of money and out of options, so as a last ditch effort to save their money they will try to get their license. Which of course won't help them, except to help them sort out that the biggest mistake they made was not using an Agent. I feel so bad for them. They now have paid $200+ on real estate education only to find that they are in much worse shape than they initially imagined. Beleive me there are tears, and they aren't mine.
Pay for some services from a professional real estate agent and you will be happier and free of headaches. You don't have to go whole hog with the full service. But don't try to do it all yourself.
Think of it this way. If I end up in court a year after the sale of my home to the Smiths. How will the judge view me? Will the judge be slanted in favor of the "poor buyer"? or will he be slanted toward the "greedy seller"? If you do get sued for anything, open your pocket book wide. The laws are slanted way in favor of buyers in the real estate world. You will be paying up and most likely way more than a commission.
People think realtors just drive you around. That's all that people see. The rest is based upon experience and many factors that the buying and selling public don't even know exists.
Well that's my schpeel. Best of luck, watch yourself!
Best of luck,
