I was terrified of thunderstorms as a kid, so my mom told me it was the angels bowling. I know it wasn't true, but it sure helped back then. So if it helps you to sleep through the night, sure.

Thunder is basically an effect of lightning. It is what happens when air is superheated and expands and then collapses due to the heating effects of lightning.
