I know it should be straightforward enough, but I'm really worried there wont be enough oxygen in the bowl for two little fish. It's a 6 litre bowl. Also, has anybody used and can tell me if those oxygenating tablets are any good?

It's great to see that you are researching this!
The following steps will ensure a healthy and successful set-up:

Step 1:
Clean the bowl with clean warm water and wipe dry with a towell.

Step 2:
Fill the bowl with tap water and leave to stand for 24hours.
- OR -
Fill the bowl with bottled spring water.
This is to ensure no chlorine remains in the water when you put your fish in there.

Step 3:
Buy a plant - ideally an oxygenating plant (the correct name is Elodea).

Step 4:
Now you can introduce your fish to the water. If possible keep the water from the bag that comes with your new fish.

Step 5:
Every week or two replace about 50% (no more unless it really needs it!) of the water so it never turns murky and stagnant.

I hope this helps you.

The best way to setup the bowl is to put some flowers or pot pouri in it or something. When you consider that common 'little' goldfish can live for decades and reach over a foot in length by the time it reaches its potential life span, a bowl hardly seems a suitable environment for them. If you really don't care about the stunted life and growth of the fish, then the best way to ensure enough oxygen for them to live at least a little while longer is with a small sized air pump to disturb the surface and create oxygen exchange with the water.

The only advice I can give you about a bowl is to throw it out and get a tank. Keeping any fish in a bowl is horrible and is actually illegal in different parts of the world because of how cruel it is. Goldfish are really messy and grow very large too so they need a large tank with a good filter.

Read this site about goldfish bowls, http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art3503.asp

And check out this site for more information about the proper way to care for a goldfish. http://kokosgoldfish.com/
It is a lot more work then most people think, not that it is harder then any other fish but most people don't treat goldfish as they do other fish, but if kept properly they can live more then 20 years. And even the smaller fancy type goldfish can grow 8-12 inches long, if kept in a bowl it won't because it will become stunted. It's where the outside stops growing but the insides don't and it is very painful for the fish until it eventually dies from it.

A 6 liter bowl would be nice for a betta, but not a goldfish.

It sounds like you love your little guys. Go and invest in a 20 gallon (long) tank,or a 29 gallon setup. It's about 100 at wal-mart,but it will have EVERYTHING. you need, except water and food (and gravel). And you will have extrodinarily happy fish. In a 29 gallon? You could even put another little goldie in,if you so wanted. =)

bowls are cruelty and totally unsuitable for keeping fish in. There is no means to filtering the water. Fish end up gulping for air and living in filthy contaminated water with high ammonia levels. Literally swimming in their own sewage. If you want to keep fish, get a proper tank and set it up with a proper filter system, cycle the water, do partial water changes every week, ensuring that you add dechlorinater to the water before adding it.

Goldfish cannot live in a bowl. They produce a lot of ammonia and make the water toxic on a daily basis. Eventually they die because the toxins in the water give them chemical burns on the inside and out of their bodies.

sounds like most answer are moaning at you...
i used to have a goldfish in a bowl mine was ok

u need some gravel in it but first it must be washed and boiled colour gravel looks nice and a litle ornerment

when you 1st put your cold water in it let it stand for twenty four hours before you put your new fish in it

you can also buy oxygenerating plant ends they just float on the water and the fish will nibble on it they dont last long but are very cheap to buy only small change

also dont over feed your fish as this will only foul your water quicker

change your water every few days but only empty half out and top up with fresh water

this is what i did and mine lived healthy and long

as for being cruel like the rest are saying think about where you purchased your fish from they was in a small tank with lots and lots of other fish over crowded i say but yet they sell lots and no one argues with them

good luck go a head and buy one

yes they do work, but even better would be to get an air pump and an airstone one end of tube. This will provide constant source of oxygen, however the pumps can be bit nosiy. Be careful that you don't get fish that will grow too big, as 6 litres isn't a lot, prob only big enough for one goldfish

just clean the bowl every other day. hopefully that will keep up with 2 goldfish and their poop. it will also make for fresh water which will have lots of oxygen in it.
