Well, ask yourself "Am I selfish ?".You will get the answer. If its no then humans are not selfish.Because it depends on your attitude and how you look at other people. If you are selfish then the whole world is more selfish than you.And if you are not selfish then the whole world would seem to you as unselfish. So enter the world with a pure heart and unselfish mind and you are through the answer "Why are humans so selfish ?"

As for as i think that all humans are not selfish,
it is very difficult to define this thing
suppose if a person steal something it can be said that he is selfish
because he steal the thing without caring the person from whom he steal, but suppose he did it because of saving the life of his child or mother who is suffering cancer or other fatel deseas
in this condition we cant say that he is selfish

Everyone isn't like this just some and i think it has everything to do with the way your raised. If you start out the only child and your never taught to share things with another person then you carry that thought on but if your taught to share with others it usually doesn't end up making you a selfish person.

It is part of human nature to be selfish, along with a lot other negative characteristics like greedy, wicked, jealous, suspicious, etc. etc. A person has to rise above his 'self' to become a great soul or a saint.

humans are animals on some level. all animals have the survival instinct. to survive you need to be selfish.
and of course each individual has his/her own definition of survival so we all have different levels of selfishness in us.

I don't know. It could be our innate desire for survival. In much earlier times, our ancestors had to survive under fierce circumstances and as a result had to be selfish once in a while.
However, we can overcome this with great desire and not be ruled by our instincts.
