Put up a "beware of dog" notice. If you dont want to get a dog - record the most fierce sounding dog barking you can find. Play it loudly if you hear anyone prowling around outside!! I also leave my sons shoes on show .... he has the biggest feet of anyone I know.. hopefully the burgulars will see these and think they are at the home of a big tough guy - shame my son is only 13 and a gentle giant!!!!!!

Hang up some animal bones & stuff like in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, & have a customized alarm that you record yourself of a chainsaw & you screaming like a lunatic, along with a very bright sensor light front & back. I have a 6ft Slam Man in my front room with the curtains open & everyone I know has said that when walking past they had a fright. Extra locks on the big doors are really cheap to buy, but work well. If you have Sky TV, watch "Beat the Burglar" (on Discovery Real Time I think), that offers loads of free tips & shows you how burglars do it.

Firstly, the obvious. Make sure everthing is locked and that things of value are not left out and can be seen. Next you can get made to measure bits of wood that you can put under door handles reaching from floor to under the handle so handle can't be pushed down to open. There are also good infra red alarms that you can place anywhere (like doorways) around the house as the noise would be a deterent. Also pebbles along a driveway/walkway are quite noisey and security lighting. Lights that go on when movement is detected.

Well, we have an alarm with sensors etc and stickers on the windows (which are lead lite - hard to break) saying we have an alarm. A huge solid wooden door, front and back and the b*****ds throw a paving stone from our patio through our french windows, set the alarm off, calmly broke a hole big enough to get through, went into the lounge unplugged all the scarts leads and wires and carried out the flat panel TV through the hole into their van they had the nerve to park on my drive way.

So basically if they want to get in they will and the alarm or anything else won't stop them if they want something. The police can't respond quickly enough and our dozy neighbours didn't even notice (One thought we were breaking up glass in our garden!?!?)

You can't put barbed wire up in case you injury the burglars and they sue you! All though you can put plastic spikes on fences. The community support officer told us to do that. Good luck!

Just put a sticker on your door letting everyone know that your friends Smith & Wesson are staying with you.
Try keeping a light on in a different room each night.
An outside light works very well. I'm the proud owned of two dogs and that alone is worth the value of any security system. Do you own your own home? Do you live in an apartment? Are there neighbors nearby? These are all pertinent information for the best answer to your needs.

Try to keep items of value out of their line of sight, most burglars are opportunists, if they are walking past a house and can see something they like the look of they'll try and nab it. Good things to do would be to close curtains at night, lock doors and windows and be vigilant. You could also put up a burglar alarm case to give the impression the house has an alarm.

Put alarm stickers on the doors and windows such that each side of your house displays at least one. Use curtains or blinds to minimize observation of what is in your house.

Keep your plantings away from your house so they don't hide someone while they jimmy the window. (Unless you have Firethorn bushes or similar I guess!)

In some towns the police department will walk around the outside and inside your home and offer suggestions for free.
If you have a sliding glass door, get a lock device that bars it shut (but you can release it easily from inside if you have to get out quick.) Get clamps for your windows, or if you have old ones use screws or nails to limit how high the ground floor windows can be opened.

put a lamp in your hallway or in the room next to your front door with one of the timers so that it switches on and off every half hour.
