Some attribute this superstition to the Last Supper at which there were thirteen: Christ and the twelve disciples. Though
this perception may have strengthened the superstition, the fear of thirteen actually predates the Last Supper.

Its origin is found in a part of the Norse mythology having to do with a banquet at Valhalla, at which Balder (the favourite of the
gods) was killed by Loki (the spirit of discord) bringing the number to thirteen.

Another reason:
Alexander wanted to be a God and accordingly made a 13th statue on the place of his capital. He died and people considered that his will to be a 13th God (12 gods, one for each month were known) was the reason of his death. After that this number was considered as unlucky.

Most folklorists traced it to Judas Iscariot since he was the last to arrive at The Last Supper and was thus the thirteenth guest -- -- yea, know that seems a stretch since with serving foilk etc there were more than Jesus and his twelve desciples .... However it ought to be noted that 1 plus 3 equals 4 and 4 is an unlucky n umber in the Orient which thrills numerologists.

Peace...............

when my grandfather was 20 he walked under a ladder, over the next 64 years his hair went grey and then fell out... how spooky is that!

Not sure about the number 13 thing, but it can't be as horrifying as what happened to my grandfather!
