The brightness of the moon depends both on the surface you see (new, quarter or full moon, etc.) and the angle of the sun's reflection. A full moon is brightest because the sun light is reflected almost directly back to earth and the albedo is maximum.

d*mn, i'll come in second place with a reflection of the sun but with a bit more explanation as to the position of the moon around the earth and the position of the sun to Earth which creates the effect of different shaped moons since it takes approx 28 days for the moon to orbit the Earth, so does it take that long for a moon cycle of different shapes.

Although in writing this im now third.

Moon does not have any light of its own. The rays of the sun falls on the moon and the same light is reflected on the earth. This is called moonlight.

The moon radiates the light reflected from the sun,

Reason being that it is following an order and in its obidience it reflects the light of that which it follows.

This in its self a sign...

A sign is something that points to other than itself...

So there is knowledge to be gained in contemplating something such as the moon and the sun and the order they follow and the light that comes from their obedience.

The moon has no light of its own. It reflects the sun’s light. At any time, half of the Earth and half of the moon are lit by the sun. The other half is in shadow!
