First, there's the Last Supper thing - Jesus and the Disciples were 13 and one (Judas) betrayed Him. But historians say that, although very popular, this isn't the actual reason why the 13 superstition originated and remained powerful in so many countries.
The fear of 13 dates back to the prosecution of the Templars by a French King called Phillip IV The Fair. He arrested all Templar Knights on 13th October 1307, which according to the legend was Friday. Many of them were tortured, almost all eventually killed, etc. The massive terror gave way to the popular superstition that Friday 13th is a bad day
