the only true answer is that the software is different.
hardware specifications may vary but they do not determin the difference between a server and personal computer.

That is like asking "What is the difference between a business car and a personal car?" They can be exactly the same or totally different. Some kinds of cars have special features that make them better for certain purposes which are more commonly used in business or personal situations. Some kinds of hardware and/or software have special features which make them better as a server or a personal computer. However, it is the way they are used that makes a server or a personal computer.

In reality there is no difference. You could make a server into a PC and a PC into a server because it's just based on it's use. A server of course serves other computers. But when you see a server advertised or sold it is usually because it has features that are usually unique to servers for example raid. Raid is when you have multiple hard drives and they simultaneously work together. If one of the hard drives were to fail, the other ones would just pick up where it left off.

hahaha

okay, that is not a funny question at all. it is really difficult and the funny part is that a friend of mine asked the question some hours ago...

a personal computer can only take very little storage devises and memory. it also has very little processing power. don't get me wrong, pc's can be used as server although they will not be that poweful as computer that were built to be servers.

servers have a lot of processing power and storage capabilities. server can be dedicated to certain juties:
* file server (storing files)
* print server (manages print jobs)
* web server (stores and manages webpages)
and so on....

basically servers are super (maybe not) computers manufactured to do a prticaular task. (you can turn you pc into a server and get in to do a particular task)...

I hope I make sense, like i said before... the question is not really easy. I took ages explaining to my friend.

good luck

A personal computer is just that, a computer for your personal use. That is where you do your work. A server on the other hand, is more passive in function, where it is used to store data or handle a network/website.

And yes, any pc can also be turned into a server.

most servers have multiple hard drives for huge storage and tons of memory but even a normal PC can be used as a server
