Adding in news items supports this, but it is also necessary to add into the regular news a bit of spectacle from time to time, to renew the fear, which would otherwise subside.

Last year's spectacle was the purported plan to bomb aircraft with on-board chemicals. Many people view it as nothing more than a conceived plan to divert attention from other things, and to gain more control over the public. Certainly, it did that, as airports around the world greatly increased staffing of security guards, so the showpiece was created, and expanded.

Terrorism is not new. It has been around for many years, but the publicity it gets serves those with political agendas, on both sides of the fence, so either the terrorism itself is encouraged, or additional reporting of it is encouraged, and that is what you see..
