My daughter was given special formula milk when she left hospital after she was born, I sorted out the cupboards and found two huge tins of this, in date and unopened. She is on normal cow's milk now so doesn't need it any more. I have asked the chemist and they won't take them back, it just seems wrong to throw them in the bin. I heard a long time ago about prescriptions being taken back by some chemists to send to 3rd world countries - does anyone know if this still exists?

why not offer it on your local freecycle and give it to people who could make use of it

Not sure about that but I also found some in the back of my cupboards and spoke to the local Health Visitor who said she had a 'young Mum' who would put these to great use. Made me feel better as, like you said, you don't want to throw them away when they worked so well for us. Have a word.

I know chemists will take old meds and destroy them for you, I've done that plenty of times, but I don't believe they still do the sending them to third world countries thing. However, try organizations such as Rotary who may have a project like that, or try your local Citizens Advice Bureau, Women's Refuge, and charities like the Salvation Army to see if they may know of someone with a need for it.

If a charity will not take it as a donation. How about making it up into milk and using it in cooking such as cakes, sauces, rice pudding, etc. No one will notice because you will have sugar and other ingredients mixed with it; and you will not have any waste. It wont do any harm, otherwise you would not have given it to your baby in the first place!

Its authentic - my son had to be on a rice-based formula, i could basically get via way of a prescription, and it cost something ridiculous like $30 a can. fortunately my coverage paid in comprehensive!!!

Why don't you take it to the hospital where you had your daughter and donate it to the special care baby unit. I know our special care unit appreciates any form of donation, I took some clothes down once for them.
