just curious, because the only reason people listen to depressing music in the first place is because they can relate to the words, but happy people shouldnt feel that in the first place??

you dont need to 'relate' to the lyrics to like the music. a song may have very sad, suicidal lyrics, but then maybe the acoustic guitar accompanying it could sound awesome, you know?

A lot of people, both depressed and happy, appreciate Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, which is very dark and about a friend's mental illness -- and you can appreciate that it is probably the best set of songs ever written around that topic of all time -- without going there yourself. But in general, I don't think it is a huge problem because happy people will prefer happy music, who wants to get bummed out ?

Happy people have sad feelings too... or they may be hiding their "true" feelings from you.
Most of the time I'm happy at work, but when I get home I get depressed and sometimes lonely. I love listening to ballads and "depressing" music.

'depressing' songs touch the heart more than any other songs because they usually have meaningful lyrics and a nicer tune. just like you dont have to be happy to listen to happy songs or in love to listen to love songs then you obviously dont have to be 'depressed' to listen to such songs.

sometimes the 'fun' pop songs are really depressing for me so I guess peple have different views on whats depressing and what will make them feel better.
