You mobile phone cannot connect to the GPS satelites in space. Standalone GPS units are designed to connect to these satellites.

Just putting software onto your phone will not be adequate, so it requires a GPS receiver to do the connection. The bluetooth is so that your phone connects to the receiver. You could also use a physical cable to connect for phones without bluetooth.

My recommendation is to buy a standalone GPS like a TomTom Go as it will be far easier than using your phone. You don't want to be driving around and relying on the GPS and then have to answer a call and get lost at the same time.
