But this is an 'adopted' name and was so as a result of the first world war when Britain was at odds with Germany.
The British royal family is originally descended from the House of Hanover and included family names including Saxony,Saxe-Coburg Gotha,Hesse and Battenberg,
It was seen as potentially embarrassing to retain these and as they applied to different family members.
The order for change was made on 17th July 1917 and by order of the Privy Council in England under the direction of the then King,George V
