I want to do something special for her to let her know she will be missed and to also thank her for all the hard work she had done for us. How do I go about doing it. I have never done something like this before. What would you do?

I would first decide if this is a tradition that you wish to start with the rest of the employees or if this is something that you feel you should just do one this one occasion, which would also decide if it is a group event or something between the two of you.

I will assume this is bettween the two of you, as group events tend to take on a rather expensive "Groundhog Day" morph that either does a sibling fight thing or grows until you are stopping work for stepgrandmother baby showers and what do you do for the employee that you are happy to see go and everyone expects a party (I'm sorry, is my frustration showing)

I would think that a nice lunch with the two of you and a gift that is a statement of support for what she is going to do, such as school stuff for one going back to school, business stuff is she is moving to a new company. I usually include some sort of new way for them to keep track of all the new people they are going to be meeting in wherever they are going and I make sure that all of my address information is already included. I point that out when I tell them that if they need me, they can always call me. The information already loaded in tells them I really mean it.

p.s. Sounds like she was lucky to have such a good boss.

that depends on if you want to thank her or you want the office to thank her, does every one else think of her in the same way- if they do then suggest lunch or a simple cake. if it's more you than the office then i would get a simple gift and give it to her on her last day.
