Thinking of putting up a site with some free original content, but worried about losing my rights to reproduce my stuff and possibly even profit from it. Do I just say copyrighted somewhere on the page?

For your protection, you must put up a legal protection for yourself on the web site. Anything along the lines of "Copyrighted, Permission to use, stuff like that" . If your stuff is good, Most REAL companys will contact you and pay you for it. But then there are the leaches who will try and steal your idea.
If your idea is a picture, incode a date/your name into it...

File for copyrights.

Contact a patent lawyer...and also be prepared to pay a big sum.
