Do we all know? And algae are somewhat better than trees so algae tanks would help remove carbon dioxide. And lets get rid of the whales whilst we're about it, since they eat plankton, some of which remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. So it might make sense to cut down trees and make spears in order to hunt whales.
That was slightly tongue in cheek but the main reason is economics. Why not stop the carbon emissions in the first place? An equally valid question would be, "Why does mankind continue to make unnecessary car journeys?", but it easier to pick on someone else, i.e. third-world countries rather than developed ones.

It is heartbreaking the rate of clearance of woods and forests. I just heard on the TV that there is a gold rush ( I did'nt hear which country) and that the prospecters are just chopping down the forest indiscriminately. When I die (not for a while yet, I hope) I am asking everyone to plant a tree in my memory.

We cut down trees to make paper, houses, etc.....thats pretty obvious...We dont just cut down the trees and leave the forest with all stumps....This creates a demand for wood...so trees are being planted to try to keep up with the demand for wood...but ofcourse trees take a few years to reach a decent size..so you dont see any results right away....This makes people believe we just chop down a forest and move onto the next one

Because mankind are the architects of their own downfall as usual and don't expect me to weep for them. Having said that we put preservation orders on trees and when they are only good for firewood chop them down. Many such trees are hardwoods like oaks and walnuts. It would make more sense to harvest them at maturity, if the owner wishes and require that a replacement is planted. it would do something to stem the imports of rainforest timber.

Trees are a renewable resource. Fact: there are more trees in America now than in the 1930s.

Because man is more interested in his present than in his children's future. Someone has always sorted out the mess he has made and he doesn't think this'll be any different. Perhaps it won't.
