I am renting an appartment, the extension sockets are already in place, BT made the main socket "live" and told me I could get the extensions working myself by buying a "kit", or pay them £50 or more per socket to do it for me, so I think the cabling etc is already there, but what do I do now??

Good Morning Amanda C. You may need to be more specific with your question.

I will assume from your question that you know nothing about installing extensions so will make the explanation as clear as possible.

You will definetely need to plug one of your extensions into the main socket. You should find on the original packaging the REN Value of your kit(s). [REN = Ringer Eqivalence Number]

Most extension kits have a REN value of 1 and the main socket will have a REN value of 4 which means that you can operate 4 extensions on the one socket.

If you go to the following link it will show you a picture of how it can be setup:

http://www.diydata.com/projects/telephone_socket/circuit2.gif
(You will need to hit the back button in the top left corner of your browser to get back to this page)

In the picture one of the extensions is plugged into the main socket then another one is plugged into the one plugged into the main socket and so on.

Hope this helps you to get it setup.

All the best

Nigel

If the cable and extension sockets are there, what colour cores are connected to which numbered terminals in the extension sockets??

If they are plug in kits the above question is irrelevant! just plug them in. A better installation would be hard wired.

re. the answer above - extensions have no REN value at all. Only the equipment plugged in has a value, it will be marked on the base, on a label, usually '1'

Just buy an extention lead you can get them from a couple of meters to about 50 meters. They are very cheap, just plug it in to the main B.T. wall socket and take it anywhere you need it. Pound shops are a good place to buy them.
