One thing that has helped India compete - especially with the U.S. - is the large population of Indians that speak English. I believe about 10% of the Indian population has learned English; that's around 100 million people. And that makes India the country with the second largest population of English speaking people in the world - the United States being number one. Many U.S. companies have moved their customer service call centers to India resulting in a huge job gain for the country (and a loss for the U.S.). The Indian government can continue to increase the country's level of competitiveness by encouraging more students to receive English education in primary and secondary school.
