I thought that it is inappropriate for your boss to answer your cell phone, unless there is some understanding worked out first. Is there a link that I can go to that has some info on the subject? I would like to know cause my boss answered my cell when I left my desk. Yes, it was a personal call. However when he told my friend not to call me during working hours unless it was an emergency I felt that he crossed the line. If he has issues regarding my personal call they should be addressed to me, not the person calling right? My friend got offended and as a result sent him an email (which was curt.) My boss took it even a step further by replying to her email. He went on about how he owns my cell phone and blah blah blah. I realize that this could have been avoided if I were a better employee. But besides that do you think that his contacting my friends is just plain wrong. No boss should have personal contact with my friends outside of work no matter the situation.

Your boss is wrong and has infringe upon your right to privacy this can be a serious punishable offense. I strongly reccommend to discuss this situation with your HR representative or better yet an employment lawyer. I would definitely get my lawyer in on this if were me. In many areas this type of behavior can be prosecuted by law.

Well, this goes right up there with , " If we only knew then what we know now." Your cell phone should not have been on your desk it should of been in your purse turn off till lunch or break time. I know of some companies that wont even allow a personal cellphone on company grounds. When he answer your cellphone he might of thought it very important emergency call and when he realized it was not then told the person do not call back during work hours. Which was his right to do . Now as far as your friend emailing him. That was wrong. This is your boss not your friends boss. Could you see yourself emailing his/her boss. No, I thought not. Again your boss answered his email. If I get email I answer it . Again they might not like the way I answer it but its answered none the less. Your right no boss should have contact with your friends outside of work . He would not of had the contact if it hadnt been for your friend. If your friend had left it be and not emailed him then he wouldnt have answered your friend.
There is nothing worse to me than a employee that is on my time in my company walking around with a phone stuck to their ear and handleing personal business of their own instead of handling business of mine.

DUDE, it's totally unprofessional and unethical. Even though he owns the phone, there is an understanding that the phone is on loan to you, as his employee. If he had any problem with you taking a personal call at work then he should have addressed you and only you.

You should definitely confront him. Confront your boss in a practical and rational manner. Perhaps writing down everything before you meet, that way you keep it to the point and rational.

If he still feels that he was right after you confront him, then I would get HR involved. You have a right to privacy and he violated that right by answering the cell phone.

depends, you got a NO cellphone policy during work hours?? if yes, then he has every right to!! 2nd, myy workplace the same, BUT certain areas, they must be turned on all the time, AND EVERYONE within ARMS reach, of any phone answers, regardless of whose phone it is!!

Yes.. he has no right to answer a call meant for you .. even if the cell belongs to the company ....
