do certain dreams have certain meanings? how do you know if your dream is going to have an effect in your real life? Is there anything different about this type of dream?

I would say that in my experience my dreams are what I make them and nothing greater.
I do enjoy, sometimes, going by websites that claim to interpret them though I keep in mind that, like a fortune cookie, they do not always directly apply to your real life.
On rare occasions people have claimed them to the equivalent of a prophetic vision but you could never know that to be true with out having been in their shoes. ~_^
I wouldn't worry so much of what dreams may mean.

Whenever I remember a dream, I go to dreammoods.com and look up keywords. It's cool cuz for the longest time I've had dreams that I'm flying but I can't fly too high because of the telephone lines. Finally, now that I've quit my old job and gone to school for what I love, my dreams let me fly high without telephone lines in sight.

You need to analyze according to your current circimstances and the subject matter of the dream. Things can have many meanings but it's what it means to you is what is important.
