The water in my area is really hard and tastes disgusting. Can anyone recommend a way to soften it that doesn't cost the earth. I had one quote from a water softening company and it was well over 1000gbp. I can buy a lot of bottles of spring water for that. He was also going to have to do lots of drilling holes in my wall and putting new pipes all over the place.

first of all you need to know what size of water softener system do you need.

1 to 3 people 16k water softener
1 to 4 people 24k water softener
3 to 5 people 32k water softener
3 to 6 people 40k water softener
4 to 7 people 48k water softener
4 to 8 people 56k water softener
5 to 9 people 64k water softener
5 to 10+people 80k water softener

then you can get one by surfing the net looking for water softener system, you find a large variety models and i am sure you find one affordable.

Get in touch with a specialist water softener Co. You should be able to have a softener fitted without drilling through walls! Sugested price should be nearer 400-500 gbp.

I have a fridge by LG which has an ice and water dispenser in it. It plumbs into the water by means of a small cable and has a water softener unit attached to it. It means that all water you drink and ice cubes are soft water. If that is too expensive and it is the taste you are worried about you can buy those Brita water filter jugs and keep it in the fridge. They even make kettles. If it is the damage to your washing machine then you can buy those Calgon tablets to put in with your wash. If it's the limescale then you can buy Cillit Bang Limescale which gets rid of it. Loads of easy ways to beat the hard water.

You need a Limescale inhibitor - one of these or similar - copy and paste the link!

It will take about three weeks to start working but by then you should notice a reduction in Limescale build up in your kettle and the water should start to taste better! Costs about £5 a year to run!

I fitted a similar one to this and have had no problems

There are many on the market and some are very expensive - they are easy to fit - all you need is a power point somwhere close to your mains water inlet. Wrap the coils around the pipes and switch on. Takes about ten minutes to fit!
