ive been told they are not good luck it has something to do with wish craft!

It probably means that you are out too late and need to go home and go to bed!!!!

More than having to do with witch craft, I think the owl is referenced in an old wive's tale that says the owl being seen means someone close to whoever saw it is going to die soon. I don't have any evidence to back up the credibility of that statement, however. Hope that is of help.

This is an old wives' tale.
Seeing an owl is no portent of bad luck any more than seeing a black cat is a sign of good fortune.
If you do see an owl it probably means that there is a good 'owely' food source nearby-mice, shrews and voles.

Ok, here's what you do if you saw an owl:
Check if it's got large eyes and wings.
Look up. It might probably be dark.
And lastly, see if it can fly!
If you've comfirmed all this...you can establish the fact that your eyesight is most excellent! lol!
Myths have a place in history, I agree...but if you ask me, owls are just harmless, beautiful and fascinating birds! They don't mean bad luck at all!

It means that you saw an owl! In ancient Greece and Rome owl where a symbol of wisdom. Athena carries an owl on her shield.
During Christianity,which opposed anything coming from antiquity, and announced everything pagan to be "unholy
and from "devil", owls became associated with witchcraft and sorcery.

When you see an owl means that it's dark because this bird lives by night but when you hear its wail it means that you're going to meet bad luck. Hearing an owl that is wails at night at some point of time is understood a bad omen
