Why do homophobic bigots think childhood sexual abuse and mental illness makes people 'become' gay?

Well it depends on the way that the child was abused. I am gay, but I wasn't made that way by "childhood sexual abuse and mental illness." All being molested has done foe me is to make me more needy and dependant on my boyfriend.

Sexual research was pioneered in the Victorian Era by Freud and Kraft-Ebbing. They believed that monogamous, heterosexual, activity, exclusively in the missionary position, was the how all people are born to function, and anything else was, therefor, a sickness. Being physicians they both knew that to cure or prevent an illness, you must understand what causes it, so they both spent considerable time and effort seeking the causative factors for what they considered a disease. That attitude, that all alternative sexualities were forms of mental illness was taught in universities for the next 80 years. The male chauvinism of the period was also reflected, the original definition of "nymphomania" was "a woman capable of orgasm". People believe what they grew up being taught, especially when it's taught at home, in church, and at school. Simple as that.

I really REALLY hate to admit this, but most of my lesbian friends have been sexaully abused as kids. But at the same time - so have most of my straight friends. So in all fairness, it's not sexual abuse that causes homosexuality. Bigots just want something to blame. If there's something that causes it, then it can be reversed - or "cured".

they're born that way.Yet,bigots are ignorant,
