Philosophy is a very male dominated subject and it still is. Feminism and euality for the sexes do not seem to have penetrated philosophy as they have other academic studies. Any women philsophers I studied during my degree were only a couple of articles here and there and they never dealt with the big philosophical questions, only with a woman's role etc. It seems that feminist theory is the only philosophy women are deemed qualified to comment on in the subject. I think it's a great shame. I struggled during my philosophy degree to overcome inherent and mostly subcoinscious prejudice against me as a woman. There were far fewer women studying it, and they were alwyas ignored and talked over in seminars by men.
It is the ridiculous notion that men have more logical analytical brains that leads to this sort of discrimination. A study done on exam papers showed that, while the pupils name was not included on the paper, if the tutor's name was, then pupils with a female teacher received poorer grades for the same quality of essays than those with male teachers.
Its an unconscious bias, and I hope that women can really strive to make their names as great thinkers, and not just great theorists about feminism. While there have been women philosophers, none of them are famous in the way all the 'philsophical geniuses' are. In fact, very few women are ever hailed as geniuses no matter what they do or accomplish. I think it you wanted to be taken seriously as a female philosopher you would have to grow a beard and give yourself a man's name.
Sorry for the rant, but it really gets on my nerves!!!

a short seek for on Wikipedia will hit upon a itemizing of practically ninety woman philosophers, with 4 from the 4th century BC. woman philosophers are a lot less nicely common than their male opposite numbers because philosophy, like society, has been male ruled for hundreds of years.

I think it's because in the early times, women were less regarded than men. Men were superior, and women were to stay at home and do what women were supposed to do. Men were the ones who were more privileged in school too. It's just later when some women bravely attempted to break the rules by writing books, etc. It was hard but their hard work payed off.

Because it is not the nature of women to think along those lines (with a few noted exceptions of course)|
Women have *different* gifts|
Their gift is that of caring for others on an individual basis|
The heart of a good woman brings happiness into the lives of those whom she comes in contact with|
The sort of happiness that she brings, allows people to view things in the proper perspective and thus facilitates them in the solving of their problems in life and allows the burden of their sorrows to be much lightened|
This is what you would call the *glue* of society, without which, no progress or peace is possible|
It is the gift of men to be the *technicians,* and *analyists,* and the *warriors|*
They are the *protectors* of others|
If a man is called to the task of philosophy, what he is doing is very valuable indeed|
For such a philosopher exposes the deceptions, the sophistries, and the self-serving motive of those pretending that they care|
This allows the innocent to avoid the terrible traps that the evil of this earth have set for them|
So both men and women, each, have their own roles in building and maintaining a peaceful and prosperous society|
