If someone wins hundreds at the National Lottery, then loses their wallet just as they've collected their winnings; the wallet gets handed in at the Police station later, but without the money... Can that person report it stolen? The young lads who handed it in must have helped themselves to it, so can the cops chase after them, even though they did hand in the wallet rather than chuck it in a ditch...
Serious answers, please, I need to help someone.
Any lawyers, law students, please give us some advice?

OK, I get the point about the lads... I admit I jumped to conclusion as I'm pretty disgusted at what happened; but you're right, my assumption is just as disgusting, it could be my own son haning in that wallet and having the finger pointed at him... I apologize, and thank you for pointing that out!

hi I'm a current police officer myself. three questions you need to ask yourself is 1, how long was the wallet missing before it was handed in? ( that should give you some idea if the lads took it or not) 2, did you see these lads before you lost the wallet? 3, and finally if you answer no or not sure to the above then you will properly not have enough evidence in a court of law to secure a prosecution. good luck and i hope you found this useful.

What a sad world we live in when by doing what we think
right and handing in a wallet they get blamed for taking what
was in it!! Yes, why did they take it to the police station? If
they had stolen the money I would of thought they would have
destroyed the evidence.
Could have been someone winning and not wanting to share
their money. Now who,s being cynical?

The kids that found it empty did the right thing by handing it in, there may well have been ID in there, so that saves having to change everything. How would they have known it was full of cash beforehand?
My husband had his wallet with £400 stolen from a locked locker in his gym, even though there was cctv of all people in gym at time, nothing was ever done about it - handed in by a postman who found it in a letter box when he emptied it! Husband never takes money to gym now!

How do you know that it did not have the money in it when it was handed to the police?
A national newspaper reported that they handed in a number of wallets containing money to various police stations.
On claiming the wallets, the reporters found that many wallets had the cash missing.

there is no theft that can be proven
they can report it stolen but its unlikely anyone would be charged. There is no proof that the the person stole it just cos they handed the wallet in, they may have just found the empty wallet

I think you can report, but sadly the police may ask you for proof that you had money in your wallet at the time that the wallet was lost.

They can be questioned by the police but I think it highly unlikely that these lads would hand over incriminating evidence If they had taken the money & I'm afraid tat is the way the law will see it if there is no other evidence.

That person who lost the money will never get it back.....even if you caught the guy, you would have to prove that the money that was stolen was the same money that the guy/gal had. Unless you have the serial numbers on the currency, it aint going to happen. You can file a report, but the only way you are going to get that money back is if the person who stole it returns it....sorry...

yes you can report it stolen but the people who turned it in can't be charged with the theft if there isn't any phyisical evidence to prove that they were the ones that stole it. that really sucks that the money was lost but since no one saw them actually take the money out of the wallet before turning it in there would be no way of getting the money from them because you would have to prove that it was them that took it. .

It would be impossible to prove in a court that someone had taken money from a wallet as the money they are carrying could be theirs or yours. There is no way to prove it was taken from your wallet and maybe it wasn't. No one could say for sure. I suggest that your friend takes more care of their wallet in future.
