Check with your employer to see if they will pay. If they won't check with community centres. St. John, Red Cross are among the more expensive providers, but there are independent training organisations that may have applied for funding grants and may offer cheaper (or even free) courses. The local education suppliment is often the best place to start looking.

Find a local branch of St John Ambulance or the Red Cross. When you find them ask about joining. They will usually have a weekly meeting at which first aid is discussed at length. St John Ambulance is probably the best but as time goes on you will be asked to wear a uniform and then come the inspections as if you were in the military. I was a member and I learned a great deal but the uniform thing turned me off. If you are working for a company why not ask to be a First Aider. Then they will arrange to send you on a paid intensive course of first aid. Meanwhile try getting a book about first aid. Both organisations publish them and you can buy direct from them.

I got mine through a 5 day course with St Johns Ambulance.
It was 4 days training, and on the friday we had a re-fresher and the test.
Excellent on your CV. It does cost a fair bit, but your employers should be happy to pay for it. You should speak to your personal development dept.
