The president in Germany is called president. The prime minister is called Chancellor (Bundeskanzler). The Kanzler (Angela Merkel) is more important than the president. Why this name Kanzler? I don't know, it's an old title I suppose

The head of government in Germany has traditionally been called Kanzler (Chancellor). The name of the office today is Bundeskanzler (Federal Chancellor); from 1871 to 1945, it was Reichskanzler.
