Again, no psychologist here but I do have quite a bit of experience in this field (sexual fantasies).
I would hazard to guess that rape is actually a more common fantasy among humans than most would want to admit to. It is about power and control, which in todays day and age is a prized possession, especially among the average person who tends to feel impotent in their daily life.
A basic introduction to S&M (also called BDSM) would include the fact that this lifestyle is for those who want to carry out sexual fantasies that wouldn't be possible in the "real world." That is to say, that someone may actually want to play at rape with someone else. Note the difference between actually raping someone (unconsensual) and someone actually wanting to play/pretend to be raped (consensual). Huge difference and all important. It should also be noted that above all in the S&M lifestyle, consensuality is of the utmost importance, otherwise you're into abuse and real rape, which this lifestyle does NOT sanction or practice.
Rape, real rape, is wrong. It is possible to safely, sanely, and consensually carry out most sexual fantasies. There is a difference between fantasy and reality and one should always keep a close eye on that line to make sure that they know where it is. Obviously I do not know your friend but just because he fantasizes about rape does not make him a rapist or even all that strange, like I said, it's a common fantasy.

I'm no psychologist, but here's what I know. From the viewpoint of an economist, there are unlimited wants but limited resources. Put into this context, men in general want attractive women, but of course, there aren't enough to go around. (I'm not talking about love here, I'm referring to short-term relationships, so I'll stay out of the whole "beautiful on the inside" viewpoint.) Since there aren't enough attractive women for all the men in the world, the men who are unable to get them, end up fantasizing about them, as does your friend.
This can also be seen in virtual games with high amounts of violence. Millions of people play the MMORPG World of Warcraft, but are they all serial killers? Of course not. I believe that people use these games as a means of escape from the mundane activities of life, since only in virtual reality can they actually become someone else without having repercussions in real life. This is probably the same with your friend, who uses his fantasies to imagine himself doing things that he cannot (and should not) do in real life. The way I see it, provided that your friend is able to differentiate his fantasies from reality, there is nothing wrong with them.
