Democracy is an illusion because- in a normal democratic nation people do not vote direstly on the issues. Further they are prevented from voting on issues, because it is deemed they are not intellignet enough to make a good decision! Yet they are allowed to vote on representatives, that are allowed to vote on the issues! If they are not smart enough to vote on issues, how is it they are smart enough to vote on a representative??
True democracy only exists in a few places on earth, those primarily being labor unions, and a few minor countries, like CUBA!
Are you suprised to learn that those screaming they are in favor of democracy, are against those few places where it actually exists??

The USA is not a true democracy, and that's a good thing. In a true democracy everyone would get a say over every decision that is made, large and small. The founding fathers believed that this would deteriorate into mob rule, and was naturally impractical. The goverment of the US is a republic or a representative democracy. Citizens get to vote to elect public officials. These public officials then make decisions that apply to all the citizens.

Democracy isn't an illusion, it's an ideal. Because it is an ideal, it may never work perfectly. But that said? The effort to make it work as well as possible is one of the best things this world has going for it. When it emerges from within a country that is ready for it (as opposed to being enforced from an external power), democracy is perhaps the best form of government people have thus far found.

Democracy is "Government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system."

It seems to me that this is what happens in most countries that claim to be democratic so why should it be an illusion? Now, if you are dissatisfied with the government then that is another thing, but please don't criticise a wonderful thing (the vote) that many people have died for to bring us.
