Perhaps you are referring to solid angles.

Section of cone and spherical cap inside a sphere.

In this figure θ = a/2 and r = 1.The area of a spherical cap on a unit sphere is the solid angle of a cone with apex angle a, that is,

2π(1 - cos(a/2)).

When a = π, the spherical cap becomes a hemisphere having a solid angle 2π. It follows that the full sphere would have a solid angle of 4π. The angle is measured in steradians.
