A lot of young kids listen to crap these days! its not music - it is a horrible noise like this dance music and rap stuff. You are not old - and are not stuck in the past-he is just cheeky!
I am over 30 and like stuff like depeche mode, billy idol, gary numan, these are to name but a few- i could go on and on!

I'm half your age and I don't like a lot of modern music, either. It's too loud, the lyrics are nonexistent or confusing (as if the 'message' is somehow lost in translation), or it is too American Idolish.
I also agree with the above poster about age to a certain extent. Looking back, I think enjoyed radio music (running home to watch MTV Countdown, etc.) the MOST when I was in junior high and early high school). A lot of my favorite songs were written during this time as a result. I like a lot of songs, though, from different generations and even many today as well.
It also has to do with taste. We all have our favorite types of music. But I don't care what anybody says, MOST people are "rock star" crazy about music in junior high and high school and the media has a good way of convincing kids those ages of what is cool and what isn't. It's contagious. You remember those days. Everybody like this or 'everybody' liked that because it was popular.

He is totally wrong. You obviously have a mature and discerning appreciation of music and cannot lower your standards to accommodate all of the modern offerings.
Wait a second.
Maybe I am getting old as well.
My experience is that at the moment in Europe they are listening to remakes of all the stuff I liked thirty years ago so all you have to do is wait a little while and your son will probably catch up with you.

I'm 35 and exactly the same. It was also exactly the same for our parents, if you remember? Music changes, but our tastes don't. I play Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd etc etc and my daughter doesn't object - but then she's only 3. Hee hee. Hey, try listening to Porcupine Tree (if you haven't already) that's a youngish band and they're prog rock so you'd be a bit more trendy.

hello there.
No you are not old at all..i am a 27 yr old female and i love all those bands, these bands have the "staying power".I have two gilrs 5 and 7..and they like watching a pink floyd video.I think this is your son,s age..my partner is 47yrs and is a musician..and listens to all sorts of music.Perhaps your son would like to take up some music lessons..irresspective of any age..people like all sorts of music. For me Music stirrs up emontional journeys throughout my life, and makes me get on with any housework i need to do...put clasic FM on and he will see how star wars and many other movies he may like to watch are classic muisc and not for any age range...take him to a music work shop.

Music has either been in a state of decline since time began or our tastes age with us. I'm 48 and like a fair bit of new stuff but would happily slash my wrists if trapped in a room full of R&B, Rap or Death Metal.

Okay, so maybe you don't have the time to spend getting to know the new stuff and its just easier to listen to the old stuff. From whats on your list I would definitely recommend listening to Nizlopi (buy the album, and try playing it five or six times to give it a chance) then re tune your radio to XFM (near London that's 104.9, but check the web page and even listen on line)
http://www.xfm.co.uk
I guarantee you will start hearing lots of things you like!
They have different regional areas, if you look on line you may find one near you. So much better than most commercial radio.
Then there is
http://pandora.com
a do it yourself radio (wont work for long in the UK, I think you have to register from the US, but may be long enough to discover something you really like, you key in the title of a favourite track and it finds others you may like

We are all getting old honey! I think it is more of a case that contemporary music is generally banal. The 'old stuff,' particularly who you mentioned, are really good. There just seems to be no talent around these days!

Because you like listening to decent/real music and appreciate it for what it was/is. Unlike the crap of today which very very few artistes are worthy of remembering!! (I'm 54)!!
