it's great to hear from all the Christians on hear, who are so far removed from being christ-like it is unreal. the only passage in the BIBLE (i'm sure you've heard of this book) mentioning homosexuality is in leviticus which says the famous passage man shall not lay with man it is an abomination. now far be it from me to critisise the bible however this was written several thousand years ago and could potentially be out of date (just a thought) but on the off chance that it isn't what i will say is that if you want to use that as a evidence for homosexuality is wrong you might want to ask yourself a few things, 1 do you eat pork? in levitivcus it says that this is wrong as the pig is a dirty animal 2. do you shave since in leviticus it says that you shouldn't since god made you this way and shaving is percieved to be an insult to god. 3. women during your period do you go into seclusion, in leviticus it says that you should as you are considered unclean.
you see there are many parts of the bible that aren't relevant to todays society could it be that it's views on homosexuality is also one. GOD never said anything about homosexuality it was the scribs and scholars that wrote the bible. and as far as the adam and steve quote goes try and be a bit more original if god is all powerful and all seeing surely he would have done something if he was so upset about gay people.
as far as the choice thing goes i truly believe that gay people do not have the choice about being gay it is purely biological you cannot make someone gay just like you canot make someone straight and what about the Gay animals that have been discovered are they choosing this life too sheep can barely think at all let alone having thoughts about which sheep they would rather have intercourse with.
stop being so narrow minded remember what the bible says judge not lest ye be judged and let him without sin cast the first stone.
think about it

I was raised Catholic and the Roman Catholic church has had this view for years. People are born gay. If you think about it, it makes total sense. Who in the world would choose to be gay, knowing that they will be doomed to a lifetime of harassment and discrimination?
Catholics believe that as long as you don't act on the feelings then everything's okay. Several other Christian denominations believe this, too. I suppose that it is for the same reasons why heterosexual people are not supposed to have sex before marriage... because sex is supposed to be for the sole purpose of making babies. So in view of that it makes sense that these Christian religions state that it is about self-control, because avoiding premarital sex is supposed to be about self-control, too.
However, I have to tell you that I do not agree with this view of things. Instead my beliefs fall more in line with the many Christian denominations that not only say that you are born gay, but they also state that there is nothing wrong with being gay and they do not tell people to stay celibate. See, it is all a matter of how you interpret the Bible. Even within the Fundamentalist Christian denominations (those who believe that you must take the Bible literally) they disagree amongst themselves as to how to practice what the Bible teaches.
None of the Christian religions agree 100% about everything. That tells me that no one knows how to exactly interpret the Bible to begin with. So I have a hard time feeling justified in telling people how they need to live their lives. It is not my place to tell people how to live. It is God's place to do so.

I have studied The Bible and theological writings for a number of years. I have researched this point and can claim not to be homophobic. To be precise, The Bible says that 'men who lie with men' will not be revived to eternal life at the day of judgement. That clearly means men who indulge in shall we say advanced sexual activity. (Lesbianism is not mentioned.) So anyone inclined that way who does not indulge is just another person successsfully resisting one of life's temptations as advised by God. Experts generally say that not all gay people are born with that urge in them as strong and basic as a heterosexual person's sex drive. Hence worries about young people being groomed, who may only be slightly interested or even going through a phase. We are all sinners and some people with faith are gay. In my view what has caused much ill feeling is the failure of some homosexuals to acknowledge they are just another sinner and throw themselves on God's mercy. Instead they are seen to deny God's specific word out of self justification. However this state of denial may have been fuelled by unchristian attitudes. The Bible says God hates sin, but not the sinner. So a true Christian should do no more than offer support and encouragemant to any sinner of any description, hoping they will change. In this context it really is true to say it is not our place to judge.

I dont believe in god, but i do know that the opinions about nature/nurture (ie being born gay, or becoming gay) are not confimed to the church.
also, opinions on whether it is a sin - and how much of a sin it is - varys from religion to religion, congregation to congregation, person to person.
My time served in 2 major religions has taught me not to expect unity in any controversial subject
{edit} - to elizabeth T.
In leviticus, if "mankind lay with mankind" it is described as 'an abomination' (Original Hebrew: to'evah).... this word, To'evah, is used only a few times in the bible. Another use, in Leviticus, is talking about the eating of shellfish...
Have you had a prawn cocktail recently??

the bible never says we should be celibate thats mans adding scripture that isn't even un there. i'm gald you're trying to learn more about openness and stuff. just remember God loves us all equally, and no sin is worse than any other one. in biblical terms eating shellfish is as bad as having gay sex. (not that it;s bad biblically speaking!) so is wearing two types of cloth at the same time, or eating pork. just be open to the idea of Gods unconditional love for all, and you'll do fine in the world. also never judge another, that's not your right!

Don't know which church you attend, but the Catholic doctrine (before the hate-spewing pope; we'll wait and see how policy changes with him...) is pretty similar. Personally, I think if God wanted to call me to be celibate, he'd call me to the priesthood, or to live a single life. He'd make me asexual instead of instilling in me a lifelong desire to find a romantic partner of either sex. I also think it's more than presumptious for ANYONE, priest or otherwise, to tell me what God is calling me to do. It's between God and I.

Pope John Paul II said the same - a few years back.
I still thing the Church is wrong to demand celibacy - why would God want LGBs and some Ts to deny themselves love when, on another page, the Church professes that God is Love?

The church does demand celibacy from homosexuals, because the "sin" is in the practising. It isn't a choice to be gay - trust me. Feel free to IM me if you'd like to discuss this - I come from a religious background.

There's always been an argument for nuture or nature. I think people feel safer in condemning something if they think you weren't born that way.
Many can't face the thought that God might have made someone Gay. For them it has to be a choice.

IM just wondering if God would want his Gay children to remain celebate for all of their lives? I mean shouldnt they experience Love and the fellings associated with it both physically and emotionally? WHat Heavenly FATHER would want their children to not be happy and themselves? I mean God Makes no mistakes and made us ALL in his image. I mean isnt denying who you trully are a sin in itself? Its lying is it not? This is why although the Scriptures are inspired by God Imperfect men still translated it. ANd I mean how can we trully beleive that IMperfect man didnt mess up the message they recieved from God?
