i'm using a G4 powerbook and a lacie porsche self powered firewire400 80gb drive... i've been using the external drive to store all of my music on, and its been fine for ages.. not long ago, it started to make a funny noise and since then its been inaccessible although the noise has completely gone...

it won't show up in finder... it will show up in disk utility although it won't mount or unmount... when it does show up in disk utility, the majority of times it refuses to allow me the options of verify or repair... when i can repair.. it fails on exit due to the directory structure.

i've tested the firewire ports, tried diskdoctor (which won't even recognise the drive) and done everything else I can think of?

I'm hesitant to try a reformat yet, as i'd like to keep as much of the music as possible...

any ideas anybody?

I would say the disk is damaged, the data may be recoverable by a specialist data recovery firm but that is usually expensive!

You should always make backups of all of your data because HDD can go wrong at any time

And to the above poster : Bad idea posting your email address here unless you like mountains of spam

i suppose your drive has crashed it's head onto the disk platter that is why the sound was coming.i don't think any s/w might help you get rid of the situation you should consider a technician to get back your data or repair the disk.if possible.if you need further help feel free to contact me at salman8506@yahoo.co.in or dronzer86@yahoo.com.

Sounds to me like a power problem - had something very similar myself. Though it is self powered does it have an option for an adapter? If so see if you can get one and try it out - it may otherwise be fine.
