It's a committment, but one that you both accept and support. You don't really think about it as "restraining," because you're living with a person that you love, that loves you and wants you to be happy. You're with a person that enjoys most of the same things you do. It's your life partner.
You're lovers, for sure, but you're a team. You support each other and help one another heal, whether we're talking actual illness, or depression, sore muscles (massage) or just daily stress.

Long story short It is a commitment to each other to love them unconditionally no matter what and be the husband and wife you are supposed to be for them with God as the center or Head of your marriage. Two become one flesh in unity and love. You are loyal and faithful to each other.

Life long commitment to one (sometimes more) people. That's it. The ritual is entirely optional.
