I would say - always.
Please note there is a difference in waking-up and getting-up.
We wake-up, open our eyes then get-up!

Sleeping a dominated by the state of Brain. When we wake-up, we terminate our sleep and the brain come out of 'that' state. Therefore, its the brain playing the critical role, not eyes!

There's been many a time I've woken up by the sounds of the trees rustling, or the birds chirping. Not necessarily opening my eyes but opening my ears first you could say.

if you sleep with open eyes you will wake up without opening your eyes definitely
