Its a scare by the scientist to get us prepared for a real emergency and to scare some funding for scientific research. Scientist do want to drive a Benz too.
Crisis will happen, but rarely in the form we think it will. IF a crisis occurs the way we think it will, we would be at least partially prepared, and therefor a true crisis would not occur. The longer the Bird flu takes to become transmittable human to human, the less likely we would get a pandemic. The reason is that we are starting to build up an immunity to that disease. Farmers are getting a dose of that virus and are acquiring immunity. Several nations has vaccine for the bird flu, although the flu will go through several mutation, the vaccine would give us partial immunity. The longer it takes the more vaciines will be produced

I think our society has become so dependant on drugs (antibiotics, vaccines, etc) that our bodies no longer can fight simple infections, bacteria, and viruses without assistance. A few decades ago people allowed (and encouraged) their children to get chicken pox, now people are lining their children up for the vaccine. I believe that the bird flu can (and probably will) become a crisis but for now, it's only a scare.

Neither. It is a potential threat that needs to be watched. Since the stuff kills 50% of the people it infects, it makes sense for people to keep an eye on it and do some contingency planning.
