I can make a prime example of what is going on in the world and how it relates to our need to "search Mars".
We are destroying our Earth. Yes, feeding starving children is important. Stopping war and violence is important. But those things have happened in some parts of the world for all of time, and that is just something that mankind does, because mankind is, by nature, cruel.
My proof that we are destroying our Earth? My proof that I'm not some biased, raving tree-hugger? The meeting in Paris, France on Friday, where men and women who have devoted their life to studying the Earth as a whole (climate, ecosystems, etc.) conclusively stated that we HAVE been destroying it for many years and if we don't stop before it is too late, we will, LITERALLY kill the Earth.
That doesn't mean just kill a certain species. That doesn't mean "make the Earth a hotter place to live". It means that, if you think of the Earth as a human being, what happens if you poison it a little bit at a time? It shortens its life. That's the best analogy I can think of.
Of course, this won't happen in my or your lifetime. Or our children, or even our great-great-great-great-great grandchildren's lifetime, but it will happen sooner rather than later.
So I applaud NASA, or the Space programs of any other nation, who will extend the longevity of mankind by working towards a way of colonizing other planets. And even if that is not the intent of launching probes/shuttles/etc., doing so will at LEAST give us info that we can us to work toward that end.
There are two other ways to spend money and accomplish this: A) Pass more laws in EVERY country prohibiting or lessening pollution, etc. or B) develop technology to reverse the damage we've done before it is too late.
But both of these options seem unlikely.

There are rumors that earth will no longer exist after some time because the asteroid may hit the earth. So they are trying to find other planets that supports life in case earth should be destroyed. They find mars interesting and feel that it may support life.they are trying to study more about this planet.I think after mars they may be interested in one of Jupiter's moons-for life. So don't be surprised.
It is the nearest planet in characteristics and distance to earth that has possibilities of Terra farming to support earth species, hopefully before this one becomes uninhabitable. Now India has announced they are in the competition with China, ESA and USA for the space race out there. Wouldn't it be ironic if a fight over a distant planet causes annhiliation of human life on this one? Yup, real funny.

there are certain reasons for this question and some of them are:-
1. due to the growing population. The humans on earth are continuously growing an due need some more place.
2. Man has a tendency of curiosity which has to be satisfied. Due to advancement in technology and the ongoing additions , we want to reach out to the remotest and unknown areas in every fields of life. By this we not only add to our knowledge but lot of manificial things happen. It's like this that if the man kind had not tried to develop air crafs and ships, we would still be using bullock carts for going places and reaching far distance areas like from one continent to other would have been a dream.
Therefore, we need to spent money on various which may not seem beneficial at this moment.

Space travel gives us more than idle curiosities answered.
Many new technologies are created and tested in this way.
Understanding Mars and its moons gives us a glimse of what may be the future of our planet. For example, if we find a living organism that does not require oxygen or water, then we might be able to find ways for humans to survive without these necessities.
Finally space exploration gives mankind hope for the future. Hope for a universe that is fully open. Its the same reason pioneers travelled into unknown west in America. To find out what is there.

Yes. It is. The future is what makes it necessary, as the world is suffering from a population explosion and a lack of resources as well as global warming and increase of pollution, it will be necessary for humans to migrate to a different planet, as there might be a shortage of time, it has to be done as soon as possible, so that the migration of the species will be made real and possible.

It's really interesting!Earth has now mostly populated &polluted.Due to the green house effect antartica is melting.Because of the increasing population the products & facilities are becoming less .there are many chances of occurence of many natural calamity.the earth is getting imbalanced, so it is good that the MARS SEARCH MISSION is going on or else one day everything will be finished
