All the major London museums and art galleries now have free entry, although special exhibitions will have an entry fee.
At South Kensington you will find the co-located Natural History Museum and Science Museum, both of which offer a fascinating day out. Just next door to these you will also find the V&A, which is nowhere near as dry as you would expect and is actually now one of my favourites - one I'll find the teapot made by Johnny Vegas!
Other favourites include Tate Modern (the whole of Bankside will give you plenty to do as well) and the National Portrait Gallery, especially some of the photographic portraits and the wonderful painting of Mo Mowlam.

The publicly owned museums will have permanent exhbitions which will be free to the public, although they do ask for donations for their upkeep. They will have temporary exhibitions every now and again which you do have to pay for but they will be advertised as you walk into the museum.
The privately owned museum will charge you a fee and will typically be between £3 and £12.
One previous respondant to your question has given a link to Wikipedia which contains a good list of museums. Unfortunately, I don't know of any list that tells which are publicly owned free and privately owned fee charging museums.
The big museums you'll find in South Kensington (Science Museum, Victoria and Albert, Natural History Museum) will be free and you quite easily spend a day there.

A lot of museums have a suggested entrance fee - that is it is free but if you want to make a donation this is what they suggest per person. We went for a day out in London last year and did all the museums - just be careful not to spend too much money on souveniers at the gift shop or on the hot dog/burger man in front of the museums!! My favourite is the British Museum - also check out the art galleries too.

Hi, I went to London a few weeks ago on a tight budget - I think a lot of musuems have free entry - The British Museum does I think, and the Tate Modern is definately worth checking out. Free entry and at the moment they have an exhibition where you can ride giant helter-skelter type slides for free too!

yes those ones are free but you have to go to the Imperial War Museum. When you enter there is a P- 51 Mustang US Air Force fighter plane and a Supermarine Spitfire of the RAF handing - it wont cost much and will be really worth it for guy stuff.

try this link.... most of big ones are free, you may have to pay to get in the bigger exhibits. My favourite is the science museum as there are lots of buttons and stuff to press. (sorry big kid talking)
