I just don't get why when parents take there child to the doctor they assume that the doctor can do anything he/she would like to with out realizing that only the parents have say over there own child? Recently my friend took her child to the doctor because she had a UTI and she allowed them to catherterize her daughter because she thought "I didn't want to but the doctor said I couldn't say no," that really angers me because you should never let anyone do anything to your kids you do't want them, so in hind sight this really isn't a question just a plea to parents out there to stand up for your kids at the Doc's office because if you don't who will? (I have an 8 month old daughter btw)

A section of the general population is naive about various things, and parents come from this general population. As you can probably tell, there are no minimum requirements for someone to become a parent except for proper sexual organs. In Texas however there is a law that makes it illegal for mentally retarded people to have sex. The legal definition of mental retardation is not broad enough for some people, to say the least.

Many parents (and many other people, for that matter) are afraid to question a doctor, as they see the doctor as being smarter and better-educated than themselves. Very few of us ARE doctors, and it's difficult to argue with someone when you don't know if they're right or wrong. I believe that it's important that parents understand that they have every right to question a doctor so that they understand WHY he/she recommends a particular procedure, and not be over-awed by the doctor's education. A good doctor who is confident and knows his stuff doesn't need to be arrogant, or keep a patient or parents at arm's length, and won't be offended by questions; if they are, it's time to find another doctor!

I agree. recently my 5 year old son was in the hospital with pneumonia and when they were about to draw blood both my husband and i let the person know that was drawing the blood that they had only one chance to get it right. No more than one poke with the needle. Well that person got it on the first try but when it came to the IV one nurse was just moving that needle around like it was nothing while my child was crying and i said hey if you don't know what you are doing let someone else do it cause you already had your chance and then another nurse came in and put the IV in with no problems.
I will not let them poke him over once, if they know what they are doing then they would get it done on the first try.
Doctors can't make you do anything. I know that and everyone else art to know that.

ever heard the expression "dont buy a dog and then do your own barking?" If you seek medical care, it's generally best to allow the caregiver to exercise their judgement as to what procedures are the best. Not like they wanted to do a spinal tap, cath is a benign procedure.
